Day trip to Toledo, a UNESCO world heritage site featuring medieval and Gothic architecture; birthplace of Toledo steel since the Roman era; former home of Spanish artist El Greco; home of the Spanish/Arab sweet treat called marzipan invented by nuns.
Day trip to Montserrat; a mountaintop Benedictine monastery. People come from all over the world to visit the “Black Madonna” or the Virgin Mary of Montserrat, a 12th century relic in the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey. Also a great location for hiking and a picnic with fantastic views of the Pyrenees mountains.
La Sagrada Familia** must do; a 200-year-old cathedral and a work still in progress designed by Antoni Gaudi. My favorite church I have ever visited.
Look for Gaudi’s architecture around city – you cannot miss it! – Casa Batllo, Casa Mila
